Names are Important

I always thought my grandmother had the coolest name, Pairlee, and always wondered where her parents found that name. Well, part of doing family research is answering that and so many other questions. Of course, you find more questions than answers, so I hope this will help all the Thompson clan in sharing and answering those questions together. My grandmother did not like her name and went by Tommy instead - short for Thompson, of course!

James Sullivan Thompson - Where I started searching

My first pretty complete family on the Thompson side is that of James Sullivan Thompson. He was born in 1853 in Tennessee and married Florence Fouch in 1896. They had at least 7 children:

1)Gilbert Bradford Thompson, who was born 5 Feb 1897 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, which was the Indian territory of the Creek Nation. Gilbert was my great-grandfather. He married Elsie Marion Allen. He was a mechanic, a telephone wire man who helped wire the coastal south for electricity, and later a manager for the Salvation Army. He died 23 Nov 1934 in Galveston, Texas and is buried in LaMarque, Texas in New Pottersfield, or a poor man's cemetery.

2)Carl Thompson, who was born in Oct 1899 in Oklahoma.
3)Harvey Thompson, who was born in 1906 in Oklahoma.
4)Floyd Thompson, who was born in 1908 in Oklahoma.
5)Thelma Thompson, who was born in 1911 in Oklahoma.
6)Josephus Thompson, who was born in 1914 in Texas.
7)Elsie Thompson, who was born in 1919 in Texas.

The first census record found for James and family is the 1900 census (110 years ago!) in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. The census information indicates:

- James Thompson age 47, married for 4 years. born in TN, father and mother born in TN. He was shown to be a day laborer, could read and write and speak English. He owned his home
- Florence Thompson age 20. born in ARK, father born in Indiana, mother born in Illinois
- Bradford (Gilbert) Thompson age 3, born in Indian Territory
- Carl Thompson age 3 mos., born in Oklahoma

The 1910 census record shows James and family living in Tulsa Co., Oklahoma, in Tulsa.:

- James Thompson head of household, age 57, white male, married for 16 years born
in TN, father and mother born in TX (could be reported wrong or the person wrote x instead of n). No occupation, speaks English, can read and write.
- Florence Thompson, wife, age 30. white female, married 16 years, 4 children born and 4 children living. Shows she and her parents were born in Arkansas. She is not employed and speaks English, can read and write.
- Gilbert Thompson, son, age 14, white male, single. Born in Oklahoma, father born in TN, mother born in AR. Spoke English, could read and write, and had no occupation.

About Me

I'm a small town girl who enjoys family and friends. I am still learning how to be a grown up and deal with my own children who are becoming grown ups. I have the absolute best husband ever! He laughs at almost anything, even a speeding ticket that I got once. He is so loving and brings me coffee EVERY MORNING! I have an adult son... there... I said it. Publicly. He is an actor and goes to college and works and all that stuff big people do... I am getting use to it. I have a daughter who is the happiest and most self confident and self assured person I have ever met. She does it so meekly as well... I am taking notes on this. She is trying to grow up... I have not found anything I can do to slow it down. I have always loved to write and I am discovering this new form and hope to give others something interesting to read about. I love family history and am excited to try and make the story of our family more personable on my family history blog sites. I find it amazing that throughout my heritage, God's hand is evident in the lives of my ancestors. I hope one day to leave an impression as they did.
